Granite is the most well known and widely used stone; it is an extremely dense stone with low porosity and is therefore stain resistant and impervious to damage from high temperatures. The lack of calcite in Granite also makes it resistant to acid erosion and etching. Granite is a stone which needs little maintenance compared to other natural stones however problems do occur which require professional repair and restoration. Although granite doesn’t etch, it is sometimes treated or sealed incorrectly which results in unsightly marks and colour inconsistencies with acid contact.
Granite can also crack resulting in the need for a professional repair. This is usually required on damaged kitchen countertop edges or badly laid tiles with serious lippage.

Our Granite restoration process consists of a multiple step mechanical process using diamond abrasive pads and water.  Generally this is a three step process that starts with grinding the surface of the stone with a course grit abrasive pad. After grinding the stone the second step is to hone the surface of the stone with a finer grit abrasive pad.  Honing makes the surface of the stone very smooth but results in very little shine. After honing, the final step is to polish the surface of the stone with fine diamond abrasive to achieve the desired finish.

Some stone marked and sold as “granite” are marble instead - always do an acid resistance test to confirm. Granite does not etch with acid.

Some overseas factories are chemically treating granite, especially absolute black to get a deeper, dark black coloration. The deeper and darker the granite surface, the more desirable. Avoid this type of granite as they will get duller if restoration is needed.
